40 year old Todd Helton will not be returning to the Rockies next season, as he has announced that he will be retiring at the end of the season. Helton has had a good career, and has a "shot" to make the Hall of Fame. So, do I think Helton will get into the Hall of Fame? I honestly believe that it's up to the voting, and who's nominated on a year to year basis. In weaker ballots, yes I think Helton would be voted in. In stronger ballots, I think he wouldn't. But, his .317 career batting average has me sold. I think he should be in the hall.

Here is a quick injury report on three players that have currently been in the news, Domonic Brown, Brett Gardner, and Stephen Strasburg.
Brown: Domomic Brown hopes to return this season, as he wants to finish the season with at least 30 homers. Currently sidelined with a nagging Achilles injury, Brown took batting practice yesterday, and may be able to return soon. I expect him to return within the next week or so. Gardner: The Yankees horrible injury luck this season just got worse, as their leadoff hitter Brett Gardner might miss the rest of the season due to a Grade 1 strain in his rib cage. Gardner leads the AL with 10 triples to go along with .273/.344/.416 slash line. Strasburg: The Washington Nationals have scratched Stephen Strasburg from tonight's start against the Philadelphia Phillies due to "forearm tightness" in his throwing arm. No other details have been announced. Ross Ohlendorf will take the ball in place of Strasburg tonight. The Seattle Mariners have traded shortstop Brendan Ryan to the New York Yankees in exchange for a player to be named later, according to multiple reports. The defensive-minded shortstop will be able to provide a boost to the Yankees defense at that position, who currently have the 5th worst shortstop fielding percentage in major league baseball with a .967 mark.
Derek Jeter's return to the lineup is looking grimmer by the day, as this move continues to show that the Yankees are struggling to find a consistent shortstop who can defend and hit. It also shows that the Yankees are willing to give up a bat in the lineup to get better defense in the field, and interesting strategy to say the least, especially for a team that has Robinson Cano, Mark Reynolds, Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson, ect. in their lineup on a daily basis.
Offensively, the 31 year old is hitting .192/.254/.265 this season with 3 HR, 21 RBI, and a 0.0 WAR. Ryan will be making his Yankees debut tonight, as he is batting eighth and playing shortstop as the Yankees take on the Baltimore Orioles tonight. The Mets are showing interest in OF Shin-Soo Choo this offseason, as he is arguably a top five free agent when winter comes around. He has played well for the Cincinnati Reds this season, who had signed him to a 1 year, 7.38 million dollar contract. He has spent most of his career in Cleveland, where he played 7 years for the Indians.
Choo has played very well this season, posting a .291/.425/.472 line with a .347 BABIP and a 4.8 WAR. He's done a great job in the outfield as well, where he has posted a .991 fielding percentage manning center field this season. He also provides decent speed. Choo is 17-for-28 on stolen bases this season. His combination of speed, contact, and fielding makes him a good leadoff guy, which is where the Reds have been utilizing him this season.
The Mets have the 29th lowest OPS from leadoff guys this season, with a .621 mark. This is obviously a position in need, and Choo is definitely a great fit for what the Mets are looking for. He has done very well this season, and should be able to land a multi-year contract with whichever team he signs with. The Mets are looking to ink him coming this winter. The Boston Red Sox could be without their center fielder for awhile. Jacoby Ellsbury will be having an MRI on his foot to determine whether he has a bone bruise or a fracture. Either way, Ellsbury will most likely be out of the lineup for an extended period of time. This all started on August 28th, when Ellsbury took a foul ball off his foot. After continuing to play, Ellsbury aggrivated the injury in the Red Sox 9-8 win over the Yankees on Thursday. He was removed from the lineup on Friday, and is now going to have an MRI done today. Jackie Bradley Jr., one of the Red Sox top prospects, was called up and is playing center against the Yankees today. Ellsbury has the third highest WAR on the Red Sox, posting a very good 5.4 mark, and will be missed very much in Boston. He is a very good player that will probably miss the rest of the season. It's unknown if and when Ellsbury could rejoin the club, but we will most likely know at the end of the day today. |
