Eric Young Jr. was racing down the first base line, and Tim Hudson came over to try and retrieve the throw from first baseman Freddy Freeman, and all of a sudden Young Jr. ran right on top of Hudson's ankle, twisting it in ways you would never want your ankle to be twisted. The gruesome scene caused silence over the New York crowd, silence in both the Braves and Mets dugouts. Silence. Young Jr. was the first to react to Hudson's injury and immediately came over to apologize to the pitcher. After a short delay, Hudson was carted off the field, and the first person to shake hands with the pitcher was none other than Eric Young Jr. His professionalism truly should be celebrated, as baseball is in a rough time with the PED case. If that wasn't enough, read what Young Jr. tweeted following the game:
That is truly a "class act" if you've ever seen one. Young Jr. plays the game of baseball the way it's supposed to be played. He's shown sportsmanship, respect, and emotion and in an event as scary as this, that's all you can really ask for. So, let's take a moment and applaud the Mets left fielder, and remember that he should be our role models, and he is a person that we should look up to.

As the Biogenesis case is currently unfolding, some ballplayers could be suspended from baseball for an extended amount of time, as the case when taking the performance enhancing drugs. Ryan Braun is currently serving his suspension due to this case, which was announced to be a 65 game suspension on Monday. But, yesterday, the world found out that Alex Rodriguez, Yankees star third baseman, could never be lacing up the cleats again. He could be banned from baseball for life. Commissioner Bud Selig has only banned one person from the MLB during his tenure, Marge Shott, former owner of the Cincinnati Reds. Alex Rodriguez also announced that he would appeal any suspension given to him, which makes sense, because if he is suspended for life, he would lose out on the rest of his contract, and he won't be able to sign with another team. Rodriguez is currently under contract through 2018, and is the richest baseball player ever in the history in the league. A-Rod has not appeared for the Yankees this season, due to injuries. He did make a rehab appearance for thirteen games, but then re-injured himself in the quad. The lifetime ban hasn't been confirmed according to Jim Bowden of ESPN.
Rodriguez is one of about twenty major and minor leaguers on Bosch's lists. Major league baseball hopes to suspend Rodriguez at least 100 games, due to his prior history with PEDs, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. If Rodriguez is suspended "only" 100 games, he would lose approximately $21 MM in salary, according to www.MLBtraderumors.com.
Francisco Rodriguez, highly regarded as the top closer on the trade deadline, will not be able to close in Miller Park anymore. He's going to be thrown right into a pennant race, in the AL East for the Baltimore Orioles. The O's have needed the bullpen depth all season, and may have just gotten what they've needed to be in the mix with the Rays and Red Sox. In return, the Brew Crew will recieve Nicky Delmonico, a 21 year old infielder who was selected in the sixth round of the 2011 draft. He's shown power potential in Class A ball, and proven that he could improve in the future. Rodriguez, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, has a miniscule 1.09 ERA this season, with 10 saves, in 24 2/3 IP. Jim Johnson is the current closer for Baltimore, who is proven and probably will not lose his job. The O's made a great trade to help them down the stretch, no doubt. You can feel better about their bullpen with the leadership, and pitching "know-how" of Rodriguez. Carlos Marmol was acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers from the Chicago Cubs, to help LA get some depth in the bullpen. Before tonight's game, LA will bring up Marmol to the bigs, and option Jose Dominguez to AAA. Marmol has pitched in five games combined for the Dodgers' A+ and AA affiliates, where he has racked up 5 IP, 3.60 ERA (2 ER), 6 SO, and 1 SV. The Dodgers hope Marmol will be more effective than he was this year for the Cubs (2-4, 27 2/3 IP, 5.86 ERA, 32 SO, and 2 SV). The Dodgers hope that their low-risk, high-reward philosophy with Marmol will be able to get them a diamond in the rough.
On the other side of the country, disaster has struck. While pitching in DC, Jason Grilli, All Star closer for the Pirates, has just been placed on the 15-Day DL. Vic Black was called up in place of Grilli. Grilli has 30 saves this season, and a very low 2.34 ERA. The Pirates hope that Grilli will only stay on the DL for 15 days, and get back to closing the door in tight situations. The Red Sox and Dustin Pedroia have reached an extension that is believed to be 7 years, for roughly $100 million. This will keep Pedroia signed from 2015 to 2021. He will have full no trade rights in this extension.
Pedroia has been with the Red Sox his entire career, staring in 2006. The 29 year old is hitting .308 with 6 HR and 57 RBI. He also has 13 stolen bases. Pedroia has been Boston's second baseman throughout his career, and it seems that it will be that way until his career ends. He has been instrumental in the Red Sox' success, and helped capture the 2007 World Series crown. The former Rookie of the Year, MVP, and four-time All Star will hope to continue his exciting play down the |
