Carlos Marmol was acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers from the Chicago Cubs, to help LA get some depth in the bullpen. Before tonight's game, LA will bring up Marmol to the bigs, and option Jose Dominguez to AAA. Marmol has pitched in five games combined for the Dodgers' A+ and AA affiliates, where he has racked up 5 IP, 3.60 ERA (2 ER), 6 SO, and 1 SV. The Dodgers hope Marmol will be more effective than he was this year for the Cubs (2-4, 27 2/3 IP, 5.86 ERA, 32 SO, and 2 SV). The Dodgers hope that their low-risk, high-reward philosophy with Marmol will be able to get them a diamond in the rough.
On the other side of the country, disaster has struck. While pitching in DC, Jason Grilli, All Star closer for the Pirates, has just been placed on the 15-Day DL. Vic Black was called up in place of Grilli. Grilli has 30 saves this season, and a very low 2.34 ERA. The Pirates hope that Grilli will only stay on the DL for 15 days, and get back to closing the door in tight situations.
