The Royals have made a couple of moves:
They signed RHP Clayton Mortensen, who went 1-2 with a 5.34 ERA for the Boston Red Sox in 2013. He, in 74 career major league games, has a 4.68 ERA. Mortensen, 29 in April, was selected in the first round of the 2007 draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. A soft-throwing righty, Mortensen was utilized by the Red Sox as an "innings eater" in 2013. On the Royals, he could have a bigger role.
Also, the Royals released RHP Luis Mendoza, who plans to pitch in Japan. Mendoza, who made his MLB debut in 2007, has a career 5.39 ERA.
