Update, 6:04 pm eastern: According to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, the Mariners are not "close" to making a trade.
The Seattle Mariners are close to dealing for a catcher, reports Jon Morosi of FOX Sports. This report could mean many things, as many catchers could be available for trade. MLBTradeRumors.com recently discussed the catching market in an interesting post. Those all could be fits for the Mariners if they do complete the trade. Morosi added later that the Braves and Mariners did discuss catcher A.J. Pierzynski in past discussions, but that is not who the team is close to acquiring. The Braves could also possibly deal Christian Bethancourt, a catching prospect who hasn't quite shown the ability to hit at the big league level. However, he has been a top-100 prospect in years past, so his abilities have been keen, at least at one point. Anyone the Mariners acquire would likely be an upgrade over starting catcher Mike Zunino, who is hitting an ugly .160/.223/.292 line with nine home runs and 20 RBIs in 277 plate appearances. --Devan Fink
