Former Phillies manager Charlie Manuel has been fired, the team announced at a 2:30 press conference. Manuel was on the hot seat after the Phillies had dropped 19 of their last 23 games. To replace Manuel, the Phillies will promote Ryne Sandberg as interim manager. This is effective immediately. He was the third base coach this season. Manuel last won his 1,000 game as a manager with Philadelphia in Atlanta. He has won 780 games in nine years in Philadelphia, and lead the team to two NL Pennants, five divison championships, and a World Series championship. Ruben Amaro hopes to keep Manuel in the organization.
