The San Diego Padres are 39-47, 8.5 games out both the National League West division and National League Wild Card races.
According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, the Padres could become sellers at this month's trade deadline and could be a major player if they decide to do so. Morosi notes that many around the league feel that GM A.J. Preller won't be willing to trade stars like Justin Upton or Craig Kimbrel, due to the fact of possible embarrassment after having high expectations coming into this season. However, if Preller is provided with the right opportunity on July 31, he will make those trades. Morosi lists Will Venable, Ian Kennedy, Joaquin Benoit, Shawn Kelley, Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner, Upton, and Kimbrel as possible trade pieces. Preller has proven that he's willing to make the trades that he feels are right for his club, so if the Padres continue to struggle, they could really be a big factor at the deadline on July 31. Many teams would be interested in almost all of their players. --Devan Fink
