David Ortiz agrees to one-year extension

The Boston Red Sox and designated hitter David Ortiz have agreed to a one-year extension, according to ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes. Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports that Ortiz's 2015 salary will be $16 million. Edes notes that Ortiz's extension may includes a vesting option for both the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

The 38-year-old Ortiz hit a triple-slash line of .309/.395/.564 with 30 home runs and 103 RBI in 137 games with the Red Sox in 2013. Over his seventeen-year career, Ortiz has been to nine All Star games, won six Silver Slugger awards, and has finished in the MVP voting six times. He has posted a career .287/.381/.549 triple-slash line (139 OPS+) and has 431 home runs and 1,429 RBI. He led the American League in homers in 2006 with 54. 

The Red Sox and Ortiz have been close to an extension for a few days now, so it was only about time before they got one done. If he continues to be the force at the plate he has been over his career, the Red Sox did a good job locking up their anchor in their lineup. Ortiz has been one of the best Red Sox over his career, and will likely finish up with the team that took him to stardom after some mediocre seasons (except for 2002) with the Minnesota Twins.
