If you heard a shock around baseball today, it was the White Sox front office's doing.
In a gigantic move, the White Sox acquired two-time All-Star third baseman Todd Frazier from the Cincinnati Reds in a three-team trade that included the Los Angeles Dodgers as well. Overall, seven players exchanged hands, with Cincinnati receiving three prospects by way of Los Angeles. Jose Peraza, Brandon Dixon, and Scott Schebler all head to the Reds. The Dodgers acquired three more prospects, Frankie Montas, Micah Johnson, and Trayce Thompson, from Chicago.

Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price will return to his position for the 2016 season, general manager Walt Jocketty announced to reporters, including the Cincinnati Inquirer's C. Trent Rosecrans on Saturday.
The second year manager Price has been under a lot of scrutiny from Reds fans. This has included an expletive-ridden rant against reporters earlier in the year, as well as poor play from the team overall. The Reds have underperformed expectations thus far this season, going 63-97 at the time of this writing. They are currently on a 13-game losing streak which could end up leading them to the No. 1 overall pick in next year's MLB Draft. Price has been the Reds manager since 2013, when he was promoted from pitching coach in October of that year. Over the past two years with Price at the helm, the Reds have fallen apart, finishing second-to-last and last in the National League Central. Bob Nightengale of USA Today first reported that the Reds would be bringing back Price in 2016. --Devan Fink
The Giants have needed an outfielder for some time and on Thursday, they got one.
San Francisco announced the acquisition of Marlon Byrd from the Cincinnati Reds, obtaining the outfield help they so desperately needed since the trade deadline. The Giants also acquired cash considerations to help pay Byrd’s contract. In return, the Reds received Double-A right-hander Stephen Johnson. The soon-to-be 38-year-old will be joining his ninth Major League organization of his 14 year career. With the deal, Byrd has endured his third trade since 2013, going from the Mets to the Pirates, the Phillies to the Reds, and now the Reds to Giants. The Giants have had a plethora of injuries in the outfield this year, seeing all three of their starting outfielders go down to injuries at one time or another. The team currently has right fielder Hunter Pence and center fielder Angel Pagan on the DL with oblique and knee injuries, respectively. Byrd will only be a two month rental for San Francisco, as they hope he will help them make a playoff push. He is in the final year of a two-year, $16 million deal signed with Philadelphia prior to 2014. While he does have a vesting option for 2016, he is unlikely to reach the plate appearance milestone he needs to get it. On the season, Byrd is hitting .237/.286/.448/.735 (98 OPS+) with 19 home runs and 42 RBIs in 388 plate appearances. --Devan Fink
The San Francisco Giants have acquired right-handed starter Mike Leake from the Cincinnati Reds, the two teams announced early Friday morning.
In return for Leake, the Reds received two prospects, right-hander Keury Mella and infielder Adam Duvall. The 27-year-old Leake has not been the best Reds' pitcher to be involved in trade rumors, with Johnny Cueto being moved earlier this week, but he has received a lot of buzz recently, considering his price isn't huge and he is still a serviceable starter. The Giants have needed pitching, especially starting pitching, to help them down the stretch run. They rank 24th in the Major Leagues in fWAR from their starters, including not so great FIP (3.97) and xFIP numbers (3.93). Leake, a free agent at the end of the season, is 9-5 with a 3.56 ERA (3.88 FIP) in 21 starts this season. Over 136 2/3 innings pitched, Leake has worked to a 90 to 34 strikeout-to-walk ratio. --Devan Fink
The Kansas City Royals have acquired Johnny Cueto from the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The teams have since announced the deal.
According to Marly Rivera of ESPN Deportes, left-hander Brandon Finnegan is "likely" going to the Reds. Along with Finnegan is lefty John Lamb, who Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reported that is also heading to Cincinnati. Both players were included as going to the Reds in the announcement of the trade, along with a third lefty, Cody Reed. This deal was struck just hours after the teamsreportedly had a deal finalized before a medical issue caused the deal to fall apart. The Royals had long since been a suitor for Cueto and had shown interest throughout his time on the market. The Royals have had issues with their rotation even before Jason Vargas tore his UCL. Cueto gives them a true ace and likely gives the team a legitimate chance of repeating as AL Champions. They are currently 59-38 and lead the AL Central by 7 1/2 games. Cueto is likely going to be the most talented pitcher to change hands before the trade deadline (though that could change with David Price in the coming week). He finished second in the NL Cy Young award voting last season and has similar success in 2015. One thing about Cueto is that he comes with little postseason experience. He's made just three starts in the playoffs over his eight year career, allowing six runs (five earned) in 8 2/3 innings pitched. Cueto's inexperience could play a role during this October, as he is the Royals' obvious No. 1 starter and will be counted on to lead them to a victory. The 29-year-old Cueto is 7-6 with a 2.62 ERA (3.12 FIP) in 19 starts this season. He has a 120 to 29 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 130 2/3 innings pitched. He has a career 3.21 ERA and 3.80 FIP. When pitching against American League opponents, he is 14-6 with a 2.80 ERA in 178 innings pitched (28 starts). "Cueto will be forever grateful to the Reds organization and the Cincinnati fans," agent Bryce Dixon told Chris Cotillo of SB Nation's MLB Daily Dish. "He is excited to be on the Royals and can't wait to join the team." The Reds do get a fair return for the All-Star pitcher, getting a guy who has MLB experience after being just a year removed from being drafted in Finnegan, a Major League ready arm in Lamb, and a wild card prospect in the Double-A starter Reed. --Devan Fink |
