Two announcements from the Cardinals organization...
- Manager Mike Matheny has agreed to a three year extension with the Cardinals. Matheny, 43, has been managing the Cardinals since 2012, and has exceeded expectations there. He has gone a combined 185-139 record there with the Cardinals. He will be extended through the 2017 season with the Cardinals. Matheny took the Cards to the the World Series this season, and has high expectations for them throughout next season.
- Also, former Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter announced his retirement today. Carpenter, 38, has a career 3.76 ERA in 15 big league seasons (9 with St. Louis). He dealt with many shoulder problems later in his career that forced him sidelined for many months at a time. The last time Carpenter made 30+ starts in a season was in 2011, when he went 11-9 with a 3.45 ERA for the Cardinals. On www.baseballreference.com, Carpenter is similar to pitchers such as Cliff Lee, John Lackey, and Roy Oswalt. That is pretty good company.
