We have now heard that Matt Garza will not be traded to the Rangers, at least in the deal that was "99% complete" yesterday. There was injury concerns between the Cubs and Rangers, but it was not over Garza.
The Rangers and Cubs are trying to negotiate a new trade with someone else, but the Cubs are allowing other teams to make offers for the ace.
It also has been noted that there is a mystery team from the National League, and it is not the Nationals or Cardinals. The Nats were rumored to be the team, but they are not wanting pick up Garza's contract.
Well, who's the mystery team? I think the Phillies could possibly jump out of nowhere, like what happened when they went out and signed Cliff Lee. Ruben Amaro Jr. also does a great job of keeping his top prospects off the market.
But, what could the Cubs get in return? The Phillies have a prospect jam at third base, where Cody Asche (AAA Lehigh Valley) and Makiel Franco (AA Reading) are not too far from the major leagues. Tyler Cloyd also could be moved, as the Cubs are looking for pitching, and he's close to being a big leaguer. Also, Adam Morgan could possibly be moved if Amaro feels that Garza is worth a good pitching prospect.
The Phillies also were rumored to be in on Garza in weeks prior, and seemed to run out of contention. But, they may have just jumped at the Rangers, just like they did for Cliff Lee.
