Cubs closer Carlos Marmol will no longer close games, manager Dale Sveum announced today. Marmol, 30, has had a rough start to his season. He is 0-1 with a 27.00 ERA to begin the season. Marmol has 1 save, but also 1 blown save. He has allowed 5 runs and 2 homeruns in only 1.2 innings of work. He had a 6.97 ERA this spring.
Marmol will be replaced by Kyuji Fujikawa, the 32 year old rookie, who had been pitching previously in Japan. Fujikawa has a 11.57 ERA this season (3 ER/2.1 IP) and had a 2.35 ERA this spring (2 ER/7.2 IP). I really don't see the need to replace Marmol, but I'm only a reporter. Marmol has the experience, the talent, and obviously the pitches to save games. He has been an all-star, and finished in the MVP voting. After a rough beginning to the season, Marmol doesn't deserve to be replaced.
