After some troubles this Spring Training of former all-star Ricky Romero, the Blue Jays have decided to send him down to the Minor Leagues to work on his form after he has been struggling this season. They have noticed that he has been throwing across his body more than he used to. Romero will be pitching in Single-A Dunedin for the Dunedin Blue Jays. But, why not send him to AA or AAA, where he will get more competition? Because, the Blue Jays have already done this exact same thing, with another pitcher, and got him back on track to the Major Leagues. Single-A Dunedin fixed all-star Roy Halladay's form when pitching to get back on track.
Let's take a look at the numbers: Halladay: Season Before Dunedin: 4-7, 10.64 ERA, 2.20 WHIP, 80 ER, 19 Games Season After Dunedin: 19-7, 2.93 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 93 ER, 34 Games Romero: Season Before Dunedin: 9-14, 5.77 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, 116 ER, 32 Games Season After Dunedin: ??? Hopefully, Romero can get back on track and continue his success as a starting pitcher. It was fun watching him pitch on the Blue Jays. J.A. Happ, former Phillies and Astros Pitcher, will take the 5th starting spot in the rotation.

Indians: On Monday, the team announced that they haved signed Matt Capps and Daisuke Matsuzaka to minor league deals. They will be staying on the team after being non-roster invitees to Spring Training.
Phillies: Released Pitcher Aaron Cook. Cook, with a 1-0 3.38 ERA, was battling with John Lannan for the 5th Rotation Spot this Spring. Phils rotation should look like this: Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Kendrick, and Lannan. Yankees: Signed first baseman Lyle Overbay to a Minor League Deal. After Mark Texaira was injured this Spring Training, the Yankees were looking for a first basemen. Overbay was cut from the Red Sox earlier today. He should be coming to Yankees camp soon. Brewers: Signed Yuniesky Betancourt. Betancourt was realeased by the Phillies minor league camp last week. He should give the Brew Crew some infield stability and be a veteran on the team. The Yankees almost have made a big move, in trading for Angels outfielder Vernon Wells. Wells, 34, had a .230/.279/.403 line last year, but only in 77 games, due to injuries. In his last 100+ game season (2011), Wells had a .218/.248/.412 line, with 25 HR and 66 RBI.
The Angels recieved two minor leaguers Exircado Cayones (OF) and Kramer Sneed (P) and cash from the Yankees. Wells, who signed a 7 Year, $126 MM contract in 2007, will have to waved his no-trade clause to head to New York. The Angels ate most of Wells' contract, but will have some more cap room that will help them acquire what they need to build a World Series winning team. The real question is, how will Wells help the Yankees? With Curtis Granderson down in center, this seems like a good move, but Vernon Wells cannot play Center Field! Even as a DH, Wells' production has gone way down, compared to his prime. I think the Yankees would be lucky if Wells hit .250. This move looks like a no-brainer, but after some thought, it looks like a bonehead move. Have fun with your new acquistition, Yankees! With only 6 days to go until the regular season, teams must start preparing their roster. The St. Louis Cardinals have placed David Freese, Third Basemen and 2011 World Series Hero, on the Disabled List, due to injuries to his back. Freese, 29, had a .293/.372/.467 line last year with 20 HR and 79 RBI. This will majorly effect the Cardinals withou their all-star Third Basemen. The Cardinals carry two other Third Basemen on their roster.
3B Matt Carpenter: 27 Years Old 2012 Stats: .294/.365/.463, 6 HR, 46 RBI .950 FLD% in 33 Games at 3rd Base (114 total games) 2013 ST Stats: .333/.444/.483, 0 HR, 5 RBI 3B Ty Wigginton: 35 Years Old 2012 Stats (with Phillies): .235/.314/.375, 11 HR, 43 RBI .833 FLD% in 22 Games at 3rd Base (125 total games) 2013 ST Stats: .128/.212/.170 0 HR, 1 RBI Obivously, it looks like Carpenter will be the front-runner to play at 3rd while Freese is on the DL, but Wigginton could still provide the lost power that Freese supplied. In either case, the Cardinals would love to still have Freese at 3rd for Opening Day, but they will have to settle with smeo Kyle Lohse has joined a new team. After being one of the top pitching free agents, Lohse was not getting the deals he asked for. Lohse and the Brewers agreed to a 3 year, 33 Million Dollar contract on Monday.
Lohse, 34, went 16-3 with a 2.86 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP last year with the St. Louis Cardinals. He came in 7th in the NL Cy Young award voting. This move will help bolster the rotation that includes young arms such as Yovani Gallardo, Marco Estrada, and Mike Fiers. His leadership and talent will help improve the Brewers, not only in the rotation, but as a whole. |
