Trade deadline day is finally here.
In the first deal of the morning, the Boston Red Sox acquired right-handed relief pitcher Addison Reed from the New York Mets in an attempt to shore up some bullpen issues that they have had throughout the year. As Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish so kindly points out, the Cubs had acquired three left-handed pitchers over the last two trade deadlines: Mike Montgomery, Aroldis Chapman and Jose Quintana. Click here to read more on Beyond The Box Score. Just a few weeks ago, I called the Kansas City Royals sellers in my “ultimate trade deadline guide.” It looks like I was dead wrong.
Since that piece, the Royals are 10-7 — which doesn’t sound great, I know. But if we narrow the focus to after the All-Star break, the team has been on a tear, winning nine straight games from July 19 to July 28, boosting their playoff odds from 19.3 percent to 52.2 percent today.
