We’re still a year away from one of the best free agent classes of all time, but the 2017-18 class includes some interesting names. Yu Darvish, Jake Arrieta, Johnny Cueto, Justin Upton and Jonathan Lucroy are all set to hit the free market this offseason, and bidding for any one of these stars could be high. It’s not one of the more robust markets, but it still has the potential for some intrigue.
Despite these names, there’s no player other than Eric Hosmer who will create such a stir. Hosmer has often been the dividing line between baseball “purists” and the sabermetric community. We’ve officially eclipsed the quarter mark in the 2017 Major League Baseball season, and two NL West teams have jumped out to surprising starts.
The Rockies and the Diamondbacks are in first- and second-place, respectively, in the division. Colorado, in fact, has the second-best record in the sport at 30-17. This is coming on the heels of a 2016 season in which those two teams finished in third and fourth in the NL West, both over 15 games behind the division-winning Dodgers.
